Kensington Palace

Originally built for the 1st Earl of Nottingham, it was bought in 1689 by William III. Sir Christopher Wren was employed to modify the house.

Queen Victoria was born here and she lived here until her accession to the throne in 1837, when she moved to Buckingham Palace. Members of the Royal Family still live in the palace. Diana, Princess of Wales lived here for a number of years.

On the ground floor is the Court Dress Collection, with dresses and uniforms worn at court from 1750 to the present day. The State Apartments are on the 1st floor. In the King’s Gallery you can see a collection of 17th century paintings.

In the grounds of the palace are the delightful Sunken Gardens, an impressive Orangery built for Queen Anne, and a statue of Queen Victoria sculpted by her daughter, Princess Louise.
